Righteousness as Right-ness, Part 2The Hebrew Bible verses. These are especially wonderful because they show the dramatic connections between YHWH and Rightness. The Holy Bible, New International Version 6Abram believed YHWH, and he credited it
to him as right-ness. 25And if we are careful to obey all
this law before YHWH our God, as he has 4After YHWH your God has driven them out
before you, do not say to 5It is not because of your right-ness
or your integrity that you are going in to 6Understand, then, that it is not because
of your right-ness that YHWH 19They will summon peoples to the mountain and there offer sacrifices of right-ness;
they will feast on the abundance of the seas, on the treasures hidden in the sand.” 23YHWH rewards every man for his right-ness
and faithfulness. The 21“YHWH has dealt with me according to my
right-ness; according to the cleanness of my hands he has
rewarded me. 25YHWH has rewarded me according to my right-ness,
according to my cleanness in his
sight. 3The God of Israel spoke, the Rock of Israel said to me: ‘When one rules over men in right-ness,
when he rules in the fear of God, 9Praise be to YHWH your God, who has
delighted in you and placed you on 8Praise be to YHWH your God, who has
delighted in you and placed you on 6I will maintain my right-ness and never let go of it; my conscience will not reproach me as long as
I live. 14I put on right-ness as my clothing; justice was my robe and my turban. 8Your wickedness affects only a man like
yourself, and your right-ness
only the sons of men. 23The Almighty is beyond our reach and
exalted in power; in his justice and great right-ness, he does not oppress. 8Lead me, O YHWH, in your right-ness
because of my enemies— make straight your way before me. 8let YHWH judge the peoples. Judge me, O YHWH, according to my right-ness,
according to my integrity, O Most High. 17I will give thanks to YHWH because of his
right-ness and will sing praise to the name of YHWH Most
High. 8He will judge the world in right-ness;
he will govern the peoples with justice. 15And I—in right-ness I will see your face; when I awake, I will be satisfied with seeing
your likeness. 20YHWH has dealt with me according to my right-ness;
according to the cleanness of my hands he has
rewarded me. 24YHWH has rewarded me according to my right-ness,
according to the cleanness of my hands in his
sight. 31They will proclaim his right-ness
to a people yet unborn— for he has done it. 3he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of right-ness for his name’s sake. 1In you, O YHWH, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame; deliver me in your right-ness. 5YHWH loves right-ness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love. 24Vindicate me in your right-ness,
O YHWH my God; do not let them gloat over me. 28My tongue will speak of your right-ness
and of your praises all day long. 6Your right-ness is like the mighty mountains, your justice like the great deep. O YHWH, you preserve both man and beast. 10Continue your love to those who know you,
your right-ness
to the upright in heart. 6He will make your right-ness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday
sun. 9I proclaim right-ness in the great assembly; I do not seal my lips, as you know, O YHWH. 10I do not hide your right-ness in my heart; I speak of your faithfulness and salvation. I do not conceal your love and your truth from the great assembly. 4In your majesty ride forth victoriously in behalf of truth, humility and right-ness;
let your right hand display awesome deeds. 7You love right-ness and hate wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above
your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy. 10Like your name, O God, your praise reaches to the ends of the earth; your right hand is filled with right-ness.
6And the heavens proclaim his right-ness,
for God himself is judge. Selah 14Save me from bloodguilt, O God, the God who saves me, and my tongue will sing of your right-ness.
5You answer us with awesome deeds of right-ness,
O God our Savior, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas, 2Rescue me and deliver me in your right-ness;
turn your ear to me and save me. 15My mouth will tell of your right-ness,
of your salvation all day long, though I know not its measure. 16I will come and proclaim your mighty
acts, O Sovereign YHWH; I will proclaim your right-ness, yours alone. 19Your right-ness reaches to the skies, O God, you who have done great things. Who, O God, is like you? 1Endow the king with your justice, O God, the royal son with your right-ness. 2He will judge your people in right-ness,
your afflicted ones with justice. 3The mountains will bring prosperity to
the people, the hills the fruit of right-ness. 10Love and faithfulness meet together; right-ness
and peace kiss each other. 11Faithfulness springs forth from the
earth, and right-ness
looks down from heaven. 13Right-ness
goes before him and prepares the way for his steps. 14Right-ness
and justice are the foundation of your throne; love and faithfulness go before you. 16They rejoice in your name all day long; they exult in your right-ness. 15Judgment will again be founded on right-ness,
and all the upright in heart will follow it. 13they will sing before YHWH, for he comes,
he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in right-ness
and the peoples in his truth. 2Clouds and thick darkness surround him; right-ness
and justice are the foundation of his throne. 6The heavens proclaim his right-ness,
and all the peoples see his glory. 2YHWH has made his salvation known and revealed his right-ness to the nations. 9let them sing before YHWH, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in right-ness
and the peoples with equity. 6YHWH works right-ness and justice for all the oppressed. 17But from everlasting to everlasting YHWH’S love is with those who fear him, and his right-ness
with their children’s children— 31This was credited to him as right-ness
for endless generations to come. 3Glorious and majestic are his deeds, and his right-ness
endures forever. 3Wealth and riches are in his house, and his right-ness
endures forever. 9He has scattered abroad his gifts to the
poor, his right-ness
endures forever; his horn will be lifted high in
honor. 19Open for me the gates of right-ness;
I will enter and give thanks to YHWH. 40How I long for your precepts! Preserve my life in your right-ness. 142Your right-ness is everlasting and your law is true. 9May your priests be clothed with right-ness;
may your saints sing for joy.” 1O YHWH, hear my prayer, listen to my cry for mercy; in your faithfulness and right-ness come to my relief. 11For your name’s sake, O YHWH, preserve my life; in your right-ness,
bring me out of trouble. 7They will celebrate your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your right-ness.
20I walk in the way of right-ness, along the paths of justice, 2Ill-gotten treasures are of no value, but right-ness
delivers from death. 4Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath, but right-ness
delivers from death. 5The right-ness
of the blameless makes a straight way for them, but the wicked are brought down by their own
wickedness. 6The right-ness
of the upright delivers them, but the unfaithful are trapped by evil
desires. 18The wicked man earns deceptive wages, but he who sows right-ness reaps a sure reward. 28In the way of right-ness
there is life; along that path is immortality. 6Rightness
guards the man of integrity, but wickedness overthrows the sinner. 34Rightness
exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people. 9YHWH detests the way of the wicked but he loves those who pursue right-ness.
8Better a little with right-ness than much gain with injustice. 12Kings detest wrongdoing, for a throne is established through right-ness.
21He who pursues right-ness
and love finds life, prosperity and honor. 5remove the wicked from the king’s presence, and his throne will be established through right-ness.
15In this meaningless life of mine I have
seen both of these: a right
man perishing in his right-ness, and a wicked man living long in his
wickedness. 21See how the faithful city has become a harlot! She once was full of justice; right-ness
used to dwell in her— but now murderers! 26I will restore your judges as in days of old, your counselors as at the beginning. Afterward you will be called the City of Right-ness, the Faithful City.” 27Zion will be redeemed with justice, her penitent ones with right-ness. 7The vineyard of YHWH Almighty is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah are the garden of his delight. And he looked for justice, but saw bloodshed; for right-ness,
but heard cries of distress. 16But YHWH Almighty will be exalted by his justice, and the holy God will show himself holy by his
right-ness. 7Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and right-ness from that time on and forever. The zeal of YHWH Almighty will accomplish this. 4but with right-ness
he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the
poor of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his
mouth; with the breath of his lips he will slay the
wicked. 5Rightness
will be his belt and faithfulness the sash around his waist. 5In love a throne will be established; in faithfulness a man will sit on it— one from the house of David— one who in judging seeks justice and speeds the cause of right-ness. 9My soul yearns for you in the night; in the morning my spirit longs for you. When your judgments come upon the earth, the people of the world learn right-ness.
10Though grace is shown to the wicked, they do not learn right-ness; even in a land of uprightness they go on doing
evil and regard not the majesty of YHWH. 17I will make justice the measuring line and right-ness
the plumb line; hail will sweep away your refuge, the lie, and water will overflow your hiding place. 1See, a king will reign in right-ness and rulers will rule with justice. 16Justice will dwell in the desert and right-ness
live in the fertile field. 17The fruit of right-ness
will be peace; the effect of right-ness will be quietness and confidence forever. 5YHWH is exalted, for he dwells on high; he will fill Zion with justice and right-ness.
2“Who has stirred up one from the east, calling him in right-ness
to his service? He hands nations over to him and subdues kings before him. He turns them to dust with his sword, to windblown chaff with his bow. 6“I, YHWH, have called you in right-ness; I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles, 21It pleased YHWH for the sake of his right-ness to make his law great and glorious. 8“You heavens above, rain down right-ness; let the clouds shower it down. Let the earth open wide, let salvation spring up, let right-ness
grow with it; I, YHWH, have created it. 13I will raise up Cyrus in my right-ness: I will make all his ways straight. He will rebuild my city and set my exiles free, but not for a price or reward, says YHWH Almighty.” 24They will say of me, ‘In YHWH alone are right-ness
and strength.’” All who have raged against him will come to him and be put to shame. 12Listen to me, you stubborn-hearted, you who are far from right-ness. 13I am bringing my right-ness near, it is not far away; and my salvation will not be delayed. I will grant salvation to Zion, my splendor to Israel. 1“Listen to this, O house of Jacob, you who are called by the name of Israel and come from the line of Judah, you who take oaths in the name of YHWH and invoke the God of Israel— but not in truth or right-ness— 18If only you had paid attention to my commands, your peace would have been like a river, your right-ness
like the waves of the sea. 1“Listen to me, you who pursue right-ness and who seek YHWH: Look to the rock from which you were cut and to the quarry from which you were hewn; 5My right-ness
draws near speedily, my salvation is on the way, and my arm will bring justice to the nations. The islands will look to me and wait in hope for my arm. 6Lift up your eyes to the heavens, look at the earth beneath; the heavens will vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment and its inhabitants die like flies. But my salvation will last forever, my right-ness
will never fail. 8For the moth will eat them up like a garment; the worm will devour them like wool. But my right-ness
will last forever, my salvation through all generations.” 14In right-ness
you will be established: Tyranny will be far from you; you will have nothing to fear. Terror will be far removed; it will not come near you. 1This is what YHWH says: “Maintain justice and do what is right, for my salvation is close at hand and my right-ness
will soon be revealed. 12I will expose your right-ness and your works, and they will not benefit you. 8Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your right-ness will go before you, and the glory of YHWH will be your rear guard.
9So justice is far from us, and right-ness
does not reach us. We look for light, but all is darkness; for brightness, but we walk in deep shadows. 14So justice is driven back, and right-ness
stands at a distance; truth has stumbled in the streets, honesty cannot enter. 16He saw that there was no one, he was appalled that there was no one to
intervene; so his own arm worked salvation for him, and his own right-ness sustained him. 17He put on right-ness
as his breastplate, and the helmet of salvation on his head; he put on the garments of vengeance and wrapped himself in zeal as in a cloak. 17Instead of bronze I will bring you gold, and silver in place of iron. Instead of wood I will bring you bronze, and iron in place of stones. I will make peace your governor and right-ness
your ruler. 3and provide for those who grieve in Zion— to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of right-ness,
a planting of YHWH for the display of his splendor. 10I delight greatly in YHWH; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of
salvation and arrayed me in a robe of right-ness,
as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest,
and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
11For as the soil makes the sprout come up and a garden causes seeds to grow, so the Sovereign YHWH will make right-ness
and praise spring up before all nations. 1For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, for Jerusalem’s sake I will not remain
quiet, till her right-ness
shines out like the dawn, her salvation like a blazing torch. 2The nations will see your right-ness, and all kings your glory; you will be called by a new name that the mouth of YHWH will bestow. 1Who is this coming from Edom, from Bozrah, with his garments stained
crimson? Who is this, robed in splendor, striding forward in the greatness of his
strength? “It is I, speaking in right-ness, mighty to save.” 24but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am YHWH, who exercises kindness, justice and right-ness on earth, for in these I delight,” declares YHWH. 6In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. This is the name by which he will be called: YHWH Our Right-ness.
16In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. This is the name by which it£
will be called: YHWH Our Right-ness.’
20“Again, when a right man turns from his right-ness
and does evil, and I 14even if these three men—Noah, Daniel
and Job—were in it, they could save 20as surely as I live, declares the
Sovereign YHWH, even if Noah, Daniel and Job 20The soul who sins is the one who will
die. The son will not share the guilt of 24“But if a right man turns from his right-ness
and commits sin and does 26If a right man turns from his right-ness
and commits sin, he will die for 12“Therefore, son of man, say to your
countrymen, ‘The right-ness of the 13If I tell the right man that he will surely live, but then he trusts in his 18If a right man turns from his right-ness
and does evil, he will die for it. 24“Seventy ‘sevens’ are decreed for
your people and your holy city to finish 3Those who are wise will shine like the
brightness of the heavens, and those 19I will betroth you to me forever; I will betroth you in right-ness
and justice, in love and compassion. 12Sow for yourselves right-ness, reap the fruit of unfailing love, and break up your unplowed ground; for it is time to seek YHWH, until he comes and showers right-ness on you. 23Be glad, O people of Zion, rejoice in YHWH your God, for he has given you the autumn rains in right-ness.
He sends you abundant showers, both autumn and spring rains, as before. 7You who turn justice into bitterness and cast right-ness
to the ground 24But let justice roll on like a river, right-ness
like a never-failing stream! 12Do horses run on the rocky crags? Does one plow there with oxen? But you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of right-ness into bitterness— 9Because I have sinned against him, I will bear YHWH’S wrath, until he pleads my case and establishes my right. He will bring me out into the light; I will see his right-ness. 3Seek YHWH, all you humble of the land, you who do what he commands. Seek right-ness,
seek humility; perhaps you will be sheltered on the day of YHWH’S anger. 3He will sit as a refiner and purifier of
silver; he will purify the Levites and refine in its wings. And you will go out and leap like calves released from the stall.
